Learning Reflections

FBI Self-as-Enterprise Reflection

All six majors at Mays come together to make a complete enterprise. In many ways these majors can relate to our everyday lives. To understand the implications and importance of them in a business it is essential that we tie it back to ourselves. The two majors that make the largest impact  on my life are finance and management.

During college, finance plays a large role in all students’ lives. My parents offered to pay for my college so one way I thought I could lower the financial burden was to live at home since I am from Bryan. One of the other ways in which I contribute to my finances is by having a job on campus. The money I get paid is for food, gas, and other things that I may want to buy such as clothes. However, being a full time student limits the me to only working 10 hours per week. Due to this problem it is very important that I budget my money. For example I calculate that I spend about $45 every two weeks on gas, leaving $105 for me to spend on food. I found that I spend about $90 on food every two weeks leaving only $15 for other kinds of purchases. A few ways that I try to save money is by packing a lunch 3 of the 5 days I go to school. In addition when I eat out I use apps such as Hooked or Pocket Points to try and get free food or food at a discounted price. For transportation I try and carpool whenever it is available or have people who ride with my give me money for gas. Now that I have completed about half of my first semester at A&M I have a better understanding of what I should and shouldn’t be spending my money on. But there are many ways in which I can help my parents with paying for my schooling in the future. Firstly, taking summer classes at Blinn to get ahead in credits without having to spend as much on tuition. Secondly, since I am a student worker I am only able to work during the hours of 8-5 on weekdays. I intend to get a job on the weekends after the first semester to save up more money for myself each month. Lastly, I hope to do well enough in my classes this semester that I qualify for a scholarship next year.

Management is another important aspect of a student's life. Especially through time and self management. Coming into college one is usually forced to juggle many more things than in high school. More time has to be made for studying, class time, clubs and for me a job as well. In high school I was part of the International Baccalaureate program which helped me prepare greatly in the time management field, so the transition to college hasn't been too bad. The most difficult thing for me has been creating time to have a social life because in high school it was built in since I had classes with 15-20 of the same people every day. As well as having to have a job along with everything else. A few things I have already done to make time management easier is planning things at the beginning of the week. This way it gives me structure to stick to and forces me to get assignments done on certain days to allow me to have a social life when I am not busy. One thing I struggle with is the time I have on monday, wednesday and friday right before my 12:40 class. As I've said before, I try to bring my lunch on these days but it is hard to turn down going to chick fil a with my friends when all I have for lunch is leftovers. However, I have been pretty good with using the time between 11:10 and 12:40 for working on homework or studying rather than socializing. To improve my self control over time in the future I hope to plan my weeks more specifically, allocating this time for planning on sunday. As well as having routine study times to help plan other events and gatherings around it on a weekly basis.

The second part of management for me is based more on the mind and body. My whole academic life I have had a problem with procrastinating. Though it may be mild, I tell myself excuses over and over again about finishing an assignment later and end up building up a lot of worry and anxiety which causes me to finish the assignment at the last minute. My Myers-Briggs indicator tells me that I am a judger rather than a perceiver, something I completely agree with. I always freak out about situations in which I haven't prepared previously for. My procrastination results in a lot of anxiety throughout my week causing a lot of stress. Stress then leads to other emotional problems which wouldn't even occur if I had prepared in a better fashion. Something that I do to try and lessen my worries is plan ahead, but I tend to plan doing my homework or assignments all in one session instead of breaking it up into little pieces. Dividing the work amongst a couple of days would help with not procrastinating and freaking out about things. To do this I will allocate time better in my study hours to work on a little bit of multiple assignments rather than spending all my time on one. As well as making sure I make time everyday to study to assure I get all of my assignments done on time. The second aspect to self management is about health. Currently the only thing I do is not drinking sodas and not eating fast food very often. The freshman fifteen can be a scary thought, so I would like to start making changes to benefit my body. I have never been too fond of any kind of food that is green besides salads with tons of ranch dressing. For this reason I need to start to try new and different vegetables that I'm not used to, in ways I haven't had before. Another thing to start is a workout regiment. In the past I have attempted to have one but was never consistent enough to see results. Although making time to workout will put more of a strain on my time throughout the week one option would be to workout with friends. This way I can have motivation and social aspects at the same time. Another option would be to lose a little bit of sleep and wake up an hour earlier, that way I can add it into my schedule without giving very much up. Though adding working out into my weekly plans may cause me to lose time in other places it is important to stay physically healthy in order to stay healthy emotionally.

To be able to be successful it is important to think about the different aspects that make us enterprises. Just as the mays majors make up a complete business, they can be used to evaluate how people can learn to be well rounded. One should be constantly trying to improve these aspects just as a business would to maximize benefit.
